NEXT PRODUCTION

TAKING SIDES
by Ronald Harwood
Mair Lloyd-Roberts returns to the director’s chair to stage this intriguing and deeply poignant production of Taking Sides.
2025 will be the year the nation, and indeed the world, marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, and we here at BADA would like to pay our own tribute with this exceptional play. Taking Sides by Ronald Harwood serves as a poignant reminder of the lingering impact of the war on individuals and societies. This gripping drama, set in the immediate aftermath of the conflict, delves into the complexities of navigating moral dilemmas and confronts the choices made during wartime. Through the lens of Wilhelm Furtwängler's controversial legacy, the play prompts audiences to reflect on questions of collaboration, resistance, and the pursuit of truth in the face of historical injustice.
Wilhelm Furtwängler, a renowned German conductor, is accused of collaborating with the Nazi regime. Major Steve Arnold, an American officer in charge of the investigation, is determined to prove Furtwängler's guilt. As the interrogation unfolds, conflicting perspectives on art, politics, and morality come to light, raising profound questions about individual responsibility and loyalty. The play navigates themes of truth, justice, and the complexities of a morally compromised world. With powerful performances and thought-provoking dialogue, Taking Sides challenges audiences to confront the grey areas of history and ethics.
As we commemorate this significant milestone in history, Taking Sides offers a timely exploration of the enduring ethical challenges that arise from wartime allegiances and the pursuit of justice in its aftermath.
